Enlistment and Early Career in Printing

In 1991, when I was 22 years old, I joined the Nigerian Air Force and became a Printer. But my journey into the world of Printing began a few years earlier. When I was 19, I was enthusiastic about realising my passion, so I started my own printing business, Azeez Majekodunmi Nigerian Enterprises.

Running my own printing company at a young age taught me much about business operations. I learned the technical aspects of Printing, like how to use the machines and create different printed materials, and important business skills. I learned how to manage finances, handle customers, and market my services. This combination of technical know-how and business acumen proved very beneficial when I received my military training in the Air Force. The skills I developed as an entrepreneur complemented my military experience, making me well-rounded and capable in both fields.

Military Training: Discipline and Responsibility

From the very start of my military training, I learned how vital discipline and responsibility are. The training was challenging and involved following strict schedules and rules. We were always held accountable for our actions, which meant we had to take ownership of everything we did.

This experience taught me how crucial it is to manage my time effectively and focus on what matters. I learned how to organise tasks based on their importance, which helped me become more efficient in my everyday life.

These lessons in discipline and time management have proven to be incredibly valuable. They enable me to face challenges more organizedly, breaking things down into manageable steps instead of feeling overwhelmed. Overall, the skills I developed during my military training have shaped my approach to personal and professional challenges, helping me tackle them confidently and clearly.

My Journey in Printing Education

I embarked on my educational journey by enrolling in a certification program in Printing at Kaduna Polytechnic, KADPOLY, in 1993. During this time, I worked diligently and was proud to be recognised as the best student in my class. This achievement motivated me to continue my studies in the field.

After completing the certification in 1994, I pursued a National Diploma (ND) in Printing. Throughout my time in the ND program, my hard work paid off as I was awarded the title of Best Student not just once but twice—once in the first year (ND1) and again in the second year (ND2). These awards were a testament to my dedication and understanding of the subject in 1998.

I furthered my education by completing my Higher National Diploma (HND) in Printing in 2001. I continued striving for excellence and was thrilled to secure the second-best Higher National Diploma Program position. This experience solidified my knowledge of Printing and equipped me with valuable skills and experiences that have shaped my career in the printing industry.

Professional Growth and Achievements in the Nigerian Air Force

During my time in the Nigerian Air Force, I worked hard and steadily moved up the ranks, ultimately achieving the rank of Flight Sergeant. In this role, I was recognised for my skills and dedication, which led me to become a Print Operator at the Command and Staff College in Jaji, Kaduna. I spent a decade there, and later, I took on the position of Deputy Head of the Printing Workshop at the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) in Oshodi, Lagos, before I retired in 2005.

In these leadership roles, I was responsible for managing various operations related to printing services. This included training staff, overseeing daily tasks, and ensuring everything ran efficiently within the printing department. My job was crucial in ensuring that all the printed materials needed for the Air Force were produced accurately and on time.

I was honoured with the Force Service Star (FSS) for my years of dedicated service and contributions to the Nigerian Air Force. This prestigious award is given to military personnel who have provided long-term and exemplary service to Nigeria. This recognition was not just a personal achievement; it reaffirmed my commitment to doing my best and serving my country with pride.

Teamwork and Camaraderie

One of the most important parts of military life is the friendships and bonds formed with fellow service members. In the military, you quickly learn that success isn’t just about what one person can achieve alone. Instead, it’s about everyone working together toward a shared goal. I’ve become much better at collaborating with others in my job and community activities. I’ve realised how crucial it is to encourage and support the people I work with. When we lift each other and recognise each person’s contributions, we can all contribute to a greater purpose. Everyone plays an essential part in reaching our shared objectives, and I strive to foster that spirit of teamwork wherever I go.

Adversity is a fundamental part of military life. When I entered training, I was exposed to challenges that tested my physical and mental strength. The training was intense, designed to push us beyond our limits and prepare us for the unpredictable and high-pressure situations we would face in the line of duty.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was resilience—the ability to endure hardship, adapt to change, and keep moving forward despite setbacks. In the military, things don’t always go as planned. There are unexpected obstacles, demanding missions, and moments of extreme pressure where quick thinking and determination can make all the difference.

Through these experiences, I developed a mindset that sees difficulties not as roadblocks but as stepping stones to growth. Instead of feeling defeated when faced with a challenge, I learned to analyse the situation, adjust my approach, and confidently push through. This skill has proven invaluable in my post-military life.

From Military Service to Academic Pursuits: A Journey of Determination

Leaving the Nigerian Air Force in 2005 was one of the most significant decisions of my life. After years of military service, rising to Flight Sergeant and serving as Deputy Head of the Printing Workshop, I needed to expand my knowledge and explore new opportunities. My passion for learning and personal growth drove me to pursue further education abroad. However, the transition was far from easy.

When I first arrived in Europe on a visiting visa, I had no clear roadmap for what lay ahead. The unfamiliar environment, financial uncertainty, and bureaucratic challenges made the journey difficult. Eventually, I found myself navigating the complex process of seeking asylum. It was a period of great uncertainty, filled with obstacles that tested my resilience and determination.

Despite these challenges, I refused to let my circumstances define me. Education was my driving force, and I was determined to continue my academic and professional development. Once I successfully normalised my documentation in Europe, I took the next step toward my goals.

I enrolled at Dublin Institute of Technology (now Technological University Dublin), pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Print and Digital Media Technology. Through hard work and dedication, I graduated with a 2:1 classification, reinforcing my belief in perseverance and self-improvement.

Eager to deepen my expertise, I furthered my studies at Malmö University, Sweden, where I earned a Master of Science in Strategic Media Development. This advanced degree broadened my technical knowledge and enhanced my strategic thinking and leadership skills.

My journey from military service to academia was filled with hardships. However, it also proved that determination, resilience, and a thirst for knowledge can overcome complex challenges. Today, my experiences testify to the power of education and the limitless possibilities that come with an unwavering commitment to growth.
